Focusing on the outdoor products sector, the fourth installment in emerging sector report series
from the Alaska Division of Economic Development and University of Alaska Center for
Economic Development examines market trends and identifies focus areas to better capture the economic opportunities of the sector in Alaska.

“Alaskans have the opportunity to equip fellow Alaskans for their outdoor pursuits and to capitalize on the growth of outdoor recreation across the country,” said Britteny Cioni-Haywood, director of the Division of Economic Development. “

Learning from Alaska outdoor product entrepreneurs who serve both the in-state market and are also reaching national and global markets, we can identify approaches to support the sector’s growth in Alaska.”

Troopers seek information in Big Lake pursuit

On 10/15/2018 at approximately 10:14 p.m. Alaska State Troopers attempted to stop a 1998 silver Honda Civic near Hollywood Road and Halston Avenue for an equipment violation. A traffic stop was initiated and the vehicle failed to yield to lights and sirens continuing to travel at high speeds. The pursuit came to an end when the vehicle traveled off the roadway and the driver and passenger fled the vehicle on foot into a wooded area along Lucile Creek Drive.

Authorities were unable to locate the suspect at that time. The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Alaska State Troopers at 352-5401.

Houston man faces charges

On 10/13/2018 at approximately 1:52 p.m., Probations Officers contacted Kenneth Rawson, age 57, of Houston, at a residence on King Arthur drive in Houston. He was found to be in violation of his conditions of release. When remanded at Palmer Pretrial Facility, he was found to have Heroin concealed on his person.

He was additionally charged with Misconduct Involving a Controlled Substance 4th and Promoting Contraband 1st. Rawson was held with no bail pending arraignment.

Arrest made in Big Lake

On 10/12/18, at approximately 1p.m. the Alaska State Troopers responded to serve a search warrant, located at a residence on Halston Avenue in Big Lake. The search warrant was the culmination of an investigation conducted by Mat-Su AST Patrol, Mat-Su SDEU, SCIU and CSU into the location of Shayne Anselm, age 23 of Willow.

Investigative revealed Anselm had two outstanding felony arrest warrants. One of the warrants was for Failure to Remand on an original charge of Failure to Stop at the Direction of a Police Officer and Vehicle Theft 1, with 4 years to serve. The other was a Probation Violation with bail set at $5,000. Anselm was additionally on probation for Robbery II, and Burglary I.

South Central SERT was activated and conducted the service of the search warrant on the residence. They were additionally assisted by the AST Statewide K9 Unit, who were in the Mat-Su area for training. They consisted of AST K9 teams from Fairbanks, Soldotna and the Mat-Su. After several hours, SERT located Anselm hiding in the residence.

He was taken into custody without further incident. Anselm was transported to the Mat-Su Pretrial Facility and remanded into their custody.

Big Lake man arrested on warrant

On 10/11/2018 at approximately 6:13 p.m., Alaska State Troopers conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle for an equipment violation near Arctic Orchid Lane in Big Lake.

Investigation revealed the driver who was identified as Johnny Hanifen, age 41 of Big Lake, had an outstanding warrant for his arrest for failure to appear.

Hanifen was transported and remanded to MSPT and held on $900 cash bail.

Troopers seek information in Willow high speed pursuit

Vehicle Pursuit/Reckless Driving/Assault 3/Vehicle Theft/Burglary

On 10/09/2018, at approximately 7:27 a.m., the Alaska State Troopers attempted to stop a grey 1999 Dodge 1500 pick-up truck near mile 63 of the Parks Highway in Willow for speeding and driving recklessly.

Investigation revealed the truck failed to stop and a traffic pursuit ensued. The truck eluded AST by driving in excess of the speed limit and nearly colliding with a civilian vehicle. AST attempted to safely end the pursuit by using the pursuit intervention maneuver (PIT), but the truck took evasive maneuvers and struck the patrol vehicle. The driver exited the truck while it was still in motion and fled on foot into the woods near the Nancy Lake Parkway.
